Ventyr, the developer of Norway’s first offshore wind farm, Sørlige Nordsjø II, has successfully deployed two specialised monitoring buoys to gather critical environmental, wind and metocean data. The dual deployment marks a significant milestone for the project, which will bring renewable offshore wind energy to the country. TechWorks Marine and AKROCEAN have deployed a wave buoy and a floating LiDAR respectively, which have started collecting vital live data on wind profile, wave dynamics, weather, subsea measurements (conductivity, depth and current profile), and the presence of birds, bats, marine mammals, and fish in the area.
Both companies collaborated with Norwegian company Windport for all local and maritime support, with the environmental expert Biotope responsible for the analysis of environmental data. Finally, Norwegian tech company Spoor have equipped one buoy with cutting-edge, AI-powered cameras designed to monitor and identify bird species and behaviours, gathering extensive data on year-round bird activity to bolster environmental conservation efforts. The combination of this innovative technology, and the buoy deployments reflect the latest in monitoring techniques, representing a major step forward in wildlife observation and ecological preservation.
The buoys are set to remain in place for at least one year, with both ready to monitor the winter conditions in the coming months.
